Belize (or British Honduras, as it was called until 1973) is part of the Yucatan peninsula and is believed to have been the center of the Maya civilization with over two million people at its height in 1000 A.D.Maya ruins are so common that they have provided the building materials for whole towns and roads in the recent past.
