French Guiana -
(Amérique du Sud) Informations sur French Guiana
French Guiana is an overseas district (“département d’Outremer”) located in South America, 7,000 km distance from Paris, France. Its capital city, Cayenne, was founded in 1544 by Spaniards looking for the mythical gold country of El Dorado. French settlers arrived in the early 1600s. Protestant families began to arrive after 1624 and remained, despite having, unlike the RCath Church, no governmental support. No indigenous Protestant church was started until the 20th century. The “département” served between 1795 and 1953 as a prison for banned French political prisoners and for common law criminals with long sentences. Since 1979 French Guiana has housed thousands of families working for Ariane Espace, the French satellite launching company. Église
