The kingdom of Congo had been established in the 14th century. The Congo River was discovered in 1484 by the Portuguese Diogo Cão. In 1880 Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza established a French protectorate by a treaty with King Makoko. In 1910 Brazzaville became the capital of French Equatorial Africa. The country gained autonomy in 1957 and independence in 1960. In 1969 it became the first popular republic in Africa. For the last 25 years political troubles, including frequent bloodshed, have marked the development of Congo.
