Grenada was discovered in 1498 by Christopher Columbus. In 1650 it was colonized by the French, and it was given to the English in 1783. In 1974 it became a parliamentary monarchy headed by the Queen of England with a residing governor. The recent history of this island has been shaped by a coup of the New Jewel (Joint Endeavour for Welfare, Education and Liberation) in 1979 which made the pro-Cuban, M. Bishop, Prime Minister. He was overthrown in 1983, liberated by a crowd of followers, but died in the following bloody rebellion. This prompted the Caribbean Organization of States to call for help from the USA. In October 1983, “Operation Urgent Fury,” led by US marines and Grenadian troops, “cleaned” the island and restored peace in five days. All foreign pro-Communist advisors had to leave the country. Over 35% of Grenada’s GNP is generated by tourism. Of the 300,000 annual visitors over 70% come on luxury cruise ships.
