Christianity came first to Burma in the 16th century (1554) through RCath missionaries. At the beginning of the 19th century (1813) Adoniram Judson of the American Bapt Mission began working in Burma. He translated the Bible (1834) and published an English-Burmese dictionary (1852). Evangelistic efforts made slow progress. While the Burmese Buddhist population hardly responded, the Gospel was received by the Hill people (Karen 1828, Shan 1861, Kachin 1876, and Chin 1886). Other missions followed: Angl (1852), Meth (1879), Advent (1915), and Assemblies of God (1924). The Ref churches represent a minority within the Christian minority. The various groups owe their existence to both missionary efforts and spontaneous movements. They serve different parts of the Hill population, especially in Chin State.
