In the 16th century the Reformation found a favorable reception in the area now called Belgium. Large parts of the country joined the Reformation. Two monks of the monastery of Augustins in Antwerp, Heinrich Voes and Johann Esch, were the first martyrs of the Reformation (1523). The Confessio Belgicaby Guido de Brès became a representative text for churches both in the Netherlands and in France (1561). The occupation by Spain (1585) meant the end of this movement. Freedom of religion was granted toward the end of the 18th century and when, in 1830, Belgium gained independence, Protestantism was able to reconstitute itself. Several Prot bodies came into existence. Major moves toward unity were undertaken in the late sixties.
