Fiji, with its 332 islands, of which approximately 110 are inhabited, is richly endowed with forest (65% of its aerial surface), mineral, and fish resources; it has one of the most developed economies among the Pacific Islands. Sugar exports and tourism are the major sources of foreign exchange. It has been independent from the United Kingdom since October 10,1970. The first missionaries — British and French — arrived in the 19th century. Whites came mainly from Australia and New Zealand. Between 1879 and 1916 some 60,000 Indians were solicited to immigrate for work on the sugar cane plantations.
